Description
Yuri Grigorovich has choreographed Sergei Prokofiev's haunting score to Sergei Eisenstein's film IVAN THE TERRIBLE. A visually dazzling, completely original work, this is a balletic rendering of the story of murder and intrigue at the court of the Tsar known as Ivan the Terrible. During the Bolshoi Ballet's visits to America, this ballet was one of the most enthusiastically received productions and here it is rendered the full cinematic treatment. Starring Yuri Vladimirov, Natalia Bessmertnova and Boris Akimov (the original cast), and featuring the orchestra and corps de ballet of the Bolshoi Theatre, this is an outstanding example of dance on film.

Summary: "dark & depressing"
Well this is a very rare look at Ivan. Here is a character I didn't know much about but learned a great deal from this ballet & the description that comes with it. The dancing is like nothing I have seen. this is a fabulous dvd & ballet lovers will not be dissapointed, recommend this highly.

Summary: "This is the greatest!!!"
I have seen all three versions of this ballet, and in my opinion, this one is by far the best. I consider it the most "Russian" in feel and presentation -- there is a strength, an energy, and a finesse in this version that the other two lack.
Bessmertnova, as always, is beautiful and the epitome of grace. Vladimirov is incredible as Ivan -- he begins as a youthful, brooding character and gradually becomes a sinister, rather paranoid, but powerful leader. I have watched this particular ballet repeatedly, and I never tire of it.
